A selection of tree heights placed even in a light dispersed manner over only 1 hector will reduce that hectors temperature in the heat and maintain above air temperature during the cold.
While I was in central India, during the early summer [prior to the beginning of the monsoon season] I was staying at a small town hotel with ceiling fans, permanently open windows and mosquito nets for the night. During the days most activities happen
during the morning and after a usual cool light lunch, no one [who has a choice] leaves the protection of the shade.
These days with the mass production and availability of aircon units of all sizes, being outside under the sun has become even more
of an unpleasant experience because of the reduction of tolerance air-conditioning brings about.
One day a young lady that I had met through a formal connection and had continued a communication with me and because of a common connection, of both of
us having gone to boarding schools in India, she wanted to give me a guided tour of her boarding school that was on the edge of the town.
On the day we left in a taxi, during the late morning. Being a girl’s boarding school of some prestige, it
was much more protected than my mountain ridge top boys only school with its pleasant altitude climate.
The light gray double steel plate front gate was six metres high as were the walls connected to either side of the solid gate door, lining out for
hundreds meters along the front perimeter before turning to encapsulate the 35 acres of walled grounds. We got out of the taxi and knocked on the small access door. The door was opened by a gateman on duty wearing the light brown be-hatted kaki's common to
many ground and secondary staff. Arrangement had been made and we were let in immediately. Within ten steps away from the perimeter gate the air temperature fell by 5 centigrade. The sudden drop from the near 40C outside of the wall felt almost chilly by comparison
and very pleasant.
The reason for this drop in temperature was because the grounds were filled with tall trees with dozens of trunks reaching up to a fairly continuous canopy about 40 metres above the ground. There were other lower trees interspaced
forming a sparser broken lower canopy. Some were fruit trees. There was a cool moistness to the air and unheard from the outside, birds were chirping all over the grounds. Wherever there was not a pathway or a building there were tree trunks reaching up. The
only places on the grounds that looked singed by the sun were the playing fields.
The trees not only provide sun protection because they also tap into the ground water and produce huge amounts of evaporation into, the above tree top air which conducts
the heat away during evaporation. Just like human sweat, cooling the tree environment further to the shading.
In only a 35 acre space the school had achieved a working permanent long-term micro climate.
[As the general prediction is: Winds will increase in Strength, Commonality with Gust Shearing being very damaging & dangerous. Wind from the sea will have the most amount of pre-landfall energy.] To counter this for the benefit of urbandized populations
& to protect soft shoreline from wind erosion & to combat wave erosion, a 500m inshore barrier of 10-20-30metre Pine trees should be Planted, at & along all interspaces. All the way arround Britain reaching down to the beachline, just like coconut
Beyond 500m the high level pine trees should then be interspaced with the long-trunk canopy trees for a further 500m & then switch to the national standard protocol of the broad canopy interspaced with Sequoia with lines of Pine where
All industries should be running clean / carbon minimal release systems. Furthermore, sensible [No individual grand projects that would be counter productive & unessearily to priority
human energies] technology developements should be applied.
The foremost idea is the inclusion of a filtration system in air turbine products. Namely jet engines, fuel or electric & wind turbines. Air is constantly moving through these devices &
could be scrubbed cleaner as it passes through.
As a planet wide approach:
The ocean already
absorbs a vast amount of carbon but we must increase it with enhanced technologies. By far the best technologies are natural ones. Phyto species should be the target for genetic modification. Increasing the low temperature survivability of Prolifera sea weed
& increasing its growth rate, we could create a mid Pacific colony that would multiply in size to match Australia in area. The rapid growth rate could force the ealier & heavier growth under water which would cause it to die & sink to the Abysal
floor & take its growth carbon with it. The decomposition gasses are both heavier & more unstable & will decompose & fall to be absorbed by the water & dissolved in rain. The lighter gas of hydrogen with rise up and bleed off into space
arriving at our Earth mass hydrogen atmospheric ratio. The monster that we will create should have a weakness to a chemistry for our ability to terminate or control it. [And Ideally a genetic kill capabilty that we can trigger as & when we need more carbon
to be released into the atmosphere.]
